Gym Etiquette in CrossFit SFS Canberra

Hey gang with so many NEW members rolling into our awesome box I thought it time to post up some of the rules here at CrossFit SFS, plus some other important info, so please take the time to read carefully for me:

1. Kids

Lisa and I love all the kids that grace us here @ CrossFit SFS. We have just had some close calls and concerns from other members.

With the 9.30am class, I would love ALL kids to remain in the Child Care area, we are paying to have your kid’s looked after them so they are in good hands.

In relation to other times, I need to ensure the kids are not running in and out through the weightlifting room onto the CrossFit floor either before or after class if their are other people training.
As you can see there are plenty of weights being thrown around the gym here and having the kids running in and out is very dangerous!
Please speak to your kids and ask that they remain in the Child minding area (or with you if Steph or Emma are not in the Child Minding room yet).
Creche outside of class
If you bring your kids in the afternoon’s or outside of the 9.30am I am happy for your kids to use the room, but please ensure the room is left exactly how it was.
Any food you bring for your kids(which is fine), please clean up after them if you can see they have left food everywhere! Vacuum is next to the coffee machine, and make sure everything is put away.

We also have no problem with your kids playing on/with the equipment before or after classes if there is no one training, but they are your responsibility and I need everything back where they took it from. More and more balls, bands, broomsticks are being left laying around, this is a dangerous place with plenty of things to get hurt (my main concern is on the bikes & GHD’s),
also under NO circumstance is your child allowed on the Assult Air Runner!!
Like I said happy for them to play around but please keep an eye on them and pack their gear away!

2. Cleanliness

Please try to walk along the concrete foot path where possible & wipe your feet thoroughly on the mats provided out the front (especially in Winter).
Do not leave your gym bags laying all over the floor, please place in the pigeon holes provided or in/under the lockers.
If you spill/make a mess whilst making your drinks/shakes then please grab the mop and clean up after yourself.
CHALK (my pet hate) – I know how important it is to use, all I ask is that when you go to use chalk, please lean over and keep your hands in the buckets when applying (remember less is better, the more you put on your hands the more they will rip).

Now some gym etiquette for you all…

CrossFit SFS Gym Etiquette

Rule 1: Don’t be late

Maybe a minute or two is ok for some boxes, but I know there are some boxes that have burpee penalties for a late arrival (which is not something we make you do). Remember, the box isn’t a globo gym—you can’t turn up whenever you please (unless it’s Open gym). Classes run in a box, and people pay good money to attend them and get their hours’ worth of fitness and instruction. So please ensure you are on time.

Rule 2: Pay attention when the coach is giving instruction

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been doing CrossFit for 1 month or 5 years, it’s disrespectful to have your own private conversation or do your own thing when the coach is trying to give instruction to the class. You may know how to perform each movement off the top of your head, but not everyone does, so just be patient and quiet and let everyone get the full benefits of the coaches’ knowledge. Besides, you might learn something new about the lift that you would have otherwise missed!

Rule 3: Introduce yourself to newcomers

We try where possible to introduce you to new people, but if you see someone you don’t know, take the initiative and head over and introduce yourself. As a current member we would appreciate it if you could make sure that the new athlete feels welcome in a new environment—especially if it’s their first taste of CrossFit. Furthermore, the new member will probably give a positive review of your box to their friends, which will bring in new business for your coach and help the community grow.

Rule 4: Cheering for the “last man standing” in a workout

It stinks to be last and we’ve all been there. We are all in a rush to put away our things (we appreciate that) and get moving on to the next part of our day. But we are a community, and we support one another. Give that last person a little extra help and cheer them on. It will make their day better and your’s as well! Then a team effort clean up will take just a minute or two if everyone helps out!

Rule 5: Wait to put your gear away

To follow on from Rule 4, please do NOT put your gear away until EVERYONE has finished the workout. Jump over and cheer others on and help them over the line. We can appreciate you might be faster than others, but they are working as hard as they can to get the job done, and a little bit of respect can go along way. Also if you make a mess in around the sink or bench CLEAN IT UP!!

Rule 6: You do not do your own training in class

Unless you have come and spoken to the coach YOU ARE NOT TO COME AND DO YOUR OWN TRAINING. I can appreciate we all have different things to work on, but that is what the Open gym times are for. When you come in you are to do what is prescribed on the day (unless you have spoken to the coach on the floor at the time).

Rule 7: Don’t drop the barbell when you’re stripping the plates

When you are cleaning up, save your coach from a brain aneurysm and strip down your barbell properly. This means you should lift the barbell and slide the plates off of it, then place it back on the floor—don’t just let it crash to the ground. This is how they get damaged, and as your coach will tell you, they’re not cheap to replace.

Rule 8. Try to avoid dropping weights!

Please at all costs try to avoid dropping barbells (from above head unless you are falling or maxing out), kettlebells, dumbells and all manner of equipment from overhead, regardless of the situation or weight. This is important because dumbbells, kettlebells and barbells with thin plates can break, bounce when dropped from overhead and ricochet into yourself and other athletes. While it is very satisfying to hear the crash of the weights against the floor, try to reserve the sensation for the strictly heavy lifts as much as possible.

Whilst we can understand you do not own this place, we believe we have a fantastic community here at CrossFit SFS and it will go a really long way (and assist us & others greatly) to treat it like your own, it will really help us keep the facility at a quality that stands above most other fitness facilities.
